Clean Up

  • Hey, just wanted to let you guys know that I'm going to start cleaning up the boards - I am not going to delete anything, of course, but I'm just going to go through the boards, lock up old threads and hopefully get an index for each forum done so that there wouldn't be many duplicate threads.
It's going to take quite a while (There's over two years worth threads to go over!) but I'll try to get it done as quickly as I can.
Opening a thread for it, so that I could keep you guys updated about what I'm doing and that if I do something that anyone disagrees with we can discuss it and decide what would be a better thing to do. Though, please, if you disagree with anything don't undo what I did, but let me know so we can talk about it and agree.
Also, I think that in the future, when anybody locks/moves threads it should be announced either here or on another thread for that, just so we would be updated with what each of us is doing and what the reasons for it are. Alright?

I'll be starting with the FAQ forum, because it has the smallest amount threads... I'll keep you updated with everything I do.

CUSTOM COMMENTS

Just finished going through the FAQ section.

I locked irrelevant threads, old threads that are no longer relevant and duplicate threads. Also, I unsticky-ed two of the sticky topics because they should really shouldn't be on the top anymore (Moderator voting and shirt color voting). Should the third year membership be unsticky as well? Let me know what you think of that.

Also, I took notes while going through this and I'm going to look through the FAQ topic and see if there is anything that needs to be added. I will not edit it, though, I'll post it here for you guys to approve, alright?

Two things that are important for me to say though that I came across:
*Posting guidelines - I think we should go over them and make suggestions of what's relevant and what isn't so maybe the admin could edit them and they could actually matter, because it was pointed out in the fact that nobody follows these.
*Forum addons, a thread that Rachael once posted (clicky) that might actually be good. I'm not quite sure how it should be done but I think that Admin should take a look and see if there's anything worth trying. I think the strikethrough code, birthday thing and maybe the title hack one would be useful/nice. Also, I can think of a few that I've seen on other message board that would be pretty cool if we could have them here. So let me know what you think about that as well?

And the last thing I've got to say about the FAQ section, should there be an index thread or not? Because from what I've seen, I think there are only three to four important topics that needs to be linked in an index, so it could just be fitted in the FAQ thread, but the other forums definitely would need an index thread so...let me know what you think about that one as well.

EDIT - another thing I forgot to mention. There are some old threads (from even over a year ago) that were posted on the FAQ section but do not belong there. Should they be left locked or moved to where they belong? I'm not sure if when you move old thread they move to be old threads somewhere else or jump as first post on another section, and I didn't want to make a mess... So, please share opinion about that as well.

The only thing I'm going to disagree with is that there is no need for us to come in here and explain why we've closed or moved a thread. That explanation will be in the thread that we moved/closed and by coming in here and announcing that, we'll be clogging this forum which really should only be used when there is an important matter or issue at hand. A doubled thread, in my opinion doesn't fall under that category, especially when the thread can still be accessed and an explanation is already in it.

Also, I still completely disagree with the index thing. There's really no need for it, at all.

Well....index thread could be really useful on the bigger sections such as When I'm Gone, Holding On, I Can Wait Forever and What If. For example, if a new member joins the boards and would like to see if there is a thread about a show they attended to? They could easily find it. If anyone would like to find a nice fanfic to read but going through the I Can Wait Forever threads is a bit of annoying? Index would be great help here as well. I just think it'd be nicer for the members to have it and that it could be great help.

And, well, if a reason is explained in the thread then there is no need but if, for example, we're locking/moving an old thread and we don't want to write it on the thread because that'll be unnecessary bumping, I think it should be mentioned here. But maybe that's just me.

These "index" posts would actually further serve to clog the boards. There simply is no need for them whatsoever. If this is to prevent double threads and the such, it won't work. Double threads happen because people don't look for threads that are already open which means 9 times out of 10, the index itself is going to either be overlooked or completely ignored.

I'm all for ideas that will make this a better place, and I'm also up for compromise. I remember when we spoke about this on MSN, and I conceded and you made the welcome thread for everyone, but I think that that's as far as this should go because in all honesty, most of what you've posted in that thread, I'd already addressed in the FAQ thread in the FAQ/Comments forum months beforehand.

I know, from other forums, that index threads could be helpful and sometimes are very needed. I don't really get why you are so highly against it but alright, that's your opinion. I'll wait to see what the others think of that and won't make any index threads if no one else thinks it is needed.

Let's focus more on actually being active mod's then trying to come up with new ideas on how to improve something that is not broken.

There's my opinion.
