My crazy "TakingOneForTheTeamTriplePlay" Florida experience

  • Some of you may have seen my Twitter posts on this, but it's hard to describe the experience in 140 charactors LOL.

My name is Peter aka BLK1995TA on twitter and Instagram  and I have been a huge SP fan for over a decade. My twitter ID is a reference to my car, a 1995 Black Trans Am, which coincidentally is how i was originally introduced to Simple Plan's music back in 2005 (you may note the similarity between my car and the one in the music video for "untitled(how could this happen to me?"  Someone on a trans am forum back then was like "hey check out this new music video with a T/A in it" and thats how it started...

Unfortunately, i can't link images here i don't think, but just pull up my Twitter and instagram and you'll see loads of them, including some of the stuff i'm going to talk about. I'm not trying to gain followers with this, it's just the easiest way i can show the pics.

So last summer, SP announced they were going to be playing a show in Orlando at the house of blues on June 23rd. That happens to be my sister stephanie's birthday, lol. yeah another coincidence, i have loads of them, but i digress. So i ordered my ticket and then a few weeks later they announced a second show in Tampa at the Hard Rock hotel casino. It was an invite only show that you had to win a pass to on a radio station. I called and i called, lol. I was caller #3 one day, and caller #9 another and they wanted #10. Failing to win a ticket to that show, i reached out to one of my twitter followers, @jeffstinco to see if he could help me out. Yes, Jeff has actually been following me on twitter for over 2 years. He was glad to help me out and put my name on the list for the show. I was really grateful and actually paid him back later somewhat, more on that later.

My original plan (no pun intended) was to go to the Tampa show on the 22nd, and the Orlando show on the 23rd and then stay the night in orlando and take my Trans Am to a car show at Old town Kissimmi, but fate had something else in mind.

About a week before the trip, Simple Plan announced they were going to do a 3rd Florida show in Palm Beach Gardens the day after the Tampa/Orlando shows and i got to thinking, They only come down here every so often and i'm already driving up to orlando and back, what's another 100 miles to go to Palm Beach Gardens and see them a 3rd time and then drive home from there? So i made the decision that ended up making the trip even that more special.

I'm going to get side tracked here for a second but i wrote a piece about all these crazy coincidences i have had with music (including a whole chapter about SP) i called "Welcome To My Life The experiences of someone with AS, ADHD, and some really strange musical coincidences " and had it printed and made into a book of sorts. I gave this to them in Tampa. In it i described things like how my dad passed away the day SP finished recording GYHO on 11/18/2010 and how i first heard gone too son on fathers day 2011. Another example was how the song welcome to my life may have kept me from suicide in 2006.

Anyway, back to the concerts. So the first concert was amazing. I was in the front row off to the side and during the Q&A i actually asked the band if they had ever had people say they had really ironic coincidences with their music and Pierre was like "yeah, have you?" and i got to explain how i was introduced to their music and that one of their songs saved me. He actually came off the stage to hug me during the Q&A saying how great that story was. That clip is also on my instagram along with some pictures i grabbed from a promo video that the casino put out that shows pierre hugging me. A later question i asked, which was in reference to the untitled music video, had to do with the tunnel they filmed at in Griffith Park. I had read that a few of the band members were fans of the movie Back To The Future and i always assumed they chose that location as it was because they were fans of the movie, Turns out, I was wrong. They didn't even know it was the same filming location. Here i was giving them info about their own music video that they didn't know. I actually tweeted proof of it in pictures the next day and it was retweeted and went around for awhile!

The second show was in Orlando at the house of blues and it was packed! i unfortunately did not have a great view at this concert (was up in the balcony) but the other 2 concerts more than made up for this.

Now onto the 3rd concert, boy oh boy let the coincidences roll.....

So the 3rd day i went to this Chevy's restaurant for lunch in Orlando before heading to PBG and i was telling my server how i was going on this 3 day SP concert trip and coincienetally when i got my check, his name was Jeff. Also during this lunch trip the song "the best day of my life" by American Authors was playing at the restaurant. I thought it was funny at the time, little did i know what was about to happen.

So after lunch, i jump in the trans am and get on the 417 toll road headed to the turnpike. For some reason, i missed my exit and at the next toll plaza i planned on getting off and turning around so i went over into the cash pay lanes instead of the sunpass lanes like i normally use. For whatever reason there was a pickup truck at the pay window that was taking forever to pay his toll. i was 3rd in line behind him, and a 70 year old woman from the UK in a jeep patriot. How do i know she was 70 and from the uk? Well, while i'm sitting there waiting my turn i look down at my phone for a second to look at the map to see where to turn aorund and all of a sudden, BOOM! no, not the song, LOL. I look up and that jeep is on my hood and bumper IN REVERSE!

Yup, the lady was impatient and she thought she could change toll lanes by backing up and failed to notice i had been stopped behind her for over 3 minutes. SMH And before anyone says it, yes i did think "how could this happen to me?" (remember i'm driving a car like the one in the video that gets into an accident)

have you ever heard that con air "define irony" line about sweet home alabama? Well i have my own version....

"Define irony, getting into an accident in your 95  trans am on the way to a concert by a band who's music you were introduced to because they have a video with a 95 trans am in it that gets into an accident." Seriously, you cannot make this up, lol. Also, I once mentioned on Twitter the irony of the fact the cars were built in St. Therese, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal and asked if they used the car as a reference to montreal. They didn't. It was purely coincidental. Speaking of coincidence, remember i said the woman was from the UK, well the accident was June 24th, the same day the UK left the EU. weird.

So we exchange insurance info and all that cause the cop that showed up was supposedly out of his jurisdiction and couldn't write the report. Luckily i have a special kind of collectors insurance on this car so i filed through my own company, but more on that later.......

I continue onto my hotel, check in, get cleaned up and head to the venue. Just as i'm driving up the street looking for parking, a car leaves what is probably the closest spot to the front of the venue and i take it. It was probably fate, lol.

I had front row seats at the bar for the concert and was going to sing one of their songs to the radio people to get a meet and greet pass but they were like "wait, aren't you that guy who's gone to all 3 SP shows here in FL? yeah you don't need to sing for a meet and greet pass, you're good" LOL Then they almost forgot they said that when i was in line. Luckily someone remembered me. The show was great and during one of the songs Pierre walked from the stage to the top of the bar and actually walked up to me first to shake my hand. it was awesome. i got a really great pic of him walking around up there singing and shaking hands after he shook mine and posted it on twitter and Pierre even retweeted it.

After the concert was over, Pierre, David, and Jeff actually hung around and mingled at the club with the fans. i got all 4 signatures (chuck wasn't on this tour unfortunately) for my VIP pass from the tampa show. Incidentally, the security people were letting me use it as a passthrough at the ID check at the door since after they checked my ID once and saw me wearing a VIP tag from a casino, it was pretty obvious i was not under 21, lol. (i'm actually 37, my birthday falls between pierre and chuck in 1979 lol)

I'd go in and out of the club every once in a while to get a break from the noise and such and once i was actually sitting outside talking to David for a little bit. I had mentioned to Pierre while i was inside how cool it would be to get a pic of the guys in front of my car cause of the coincidences and such and he thought it was actually a pretty cool idea. It didn't happen exactly that way, but.....

around 12:30 i'm hanging outside and out comes Jeff Stinco with his guitar case. It's pretty obvious he's getting ready to leave and i think "if i'm gonna try to get a pic,it's now or never" so i walk up to Jeff and ask him if he could do me a quick favor. He was pretty tired and was like "i don't know if i can do any favors, i need to figure out how to get back to my hotel."

A lighbult instantly went off in my head LOL.

I said "Well jeff, ironically, the favor i was going to ask was if you could take a pic in front of my Trans Am cause of all the conincidences and stuff. If you need a ride to your hotel, i can drive you."

To which he replied "you're ok to drive?" (we were at a bar afterall) and i responded that I don't drink and had only been having pepsi the whole night (100% true)

so we walk over to my car which like i mentioned earler was less than 100 ft from the front of the venue, in probably the closest legal parking spot to it,

I drove Jeff to his hotel and we actually had a pretty cool conversation on the way and when i dropped him off, I got the pic i had wanted, along with a selfie with him and I. It was definaitely one of those "pics or it didn't happen" sort of stories LOL. On the way back to my hotel, i glanced over into the seat cause something caught my eye. Jeff had left something in the car. Maybe on accident, likely intentional, but there was a guitar pic in the seat. How cool is that?

After I got home the next day, i filed an insurance claim to get my car fixed and my insurance company ended up paying me $4300 for what amounted to pretty minor damage. They were going to replace the composite hood on my car which has a $2000 replacement cost. I was able to get the hood repaired and had the whole car repainted with new decals for under $3,000. I used the rest of the money for new shocks, a new fuel pump, and a new dash pad.

How crazy is that? A few changes in my schedule, and i end up not only giving a memeber of my favorite band a ride to his hotel, but also get my car restored.

This is all 100% true. You can not make up something like this, lol. And i have the pics to prove it too. :)

    Thanks for reading.

Thank you.Little update on this. I saw them again last weekend in Florida in Ft. Lauderdale at the official start of the 15th anniv. NPNHJP tour kickoff. 15 years to the day after the album came off. Seb mentioned on his radio show earlier this week that the day the album was released, they were playing a show in Peoria, Illinois. Peoria Illinois is my mom's hometown, seriously. The coincidences keep on coming, lol.I renewed SP crew so i could do the soundcheck as i couldn't really afford the vip and i was also driving 2 hrs there and 2 hrs back to fort myers so it would have been a late night (i already didn't get home until after 1 am lol) I took the guitar pick that jeff left in my car last summer (turns out it fell out of his pocket and he didn't even realize it) and got it signed last weekend and took selfies with the guys (except i forgot to get one with david for some reason although i did chat with him) They defintely rememebered me from last summer. Jeff even thanked me again for giving him i ride. i told him the pleasure was all mine.

I added some more photos to my instagram. The 2 at the top were from last year that i had recently uploaded here so i was able to attach them.
